Want to be healthier and have a more healthy system? Want to feel better? In this article, we tell you how.
The most important thing is to not smoke. If you do, give it up right now. It causes cancer, and other kinds of sickness. If you are around people who smoke, try to stay away from them. Also, watch your portions when you eat. Heap the vegetables up on your plate, but don’t overload on the meat – especially, it’s a good idea to stay away from too much red meat, as it increases your cholesterol. Eat your food slowly, and chew slowly, so that you don’t have to take second helpings. Also, try to serve yourself at least 4-5 portions of fruit and vegetables each day – one portion means around 80 gm. Eat carrots, bananas, apples, broccoli, beans, etc.
Try to consume foods cooked in less oil, and foods with reduced fat – try the fat free versions of dairy products, salad dressings, and spreads. Also cut the fat off meat. Cut down on your salt intake as well – as too much salt can increase your blood pressure, thus you are more prone to heart disease and strokes. We advise you not to snack between meals, but if you are really hungry, avoid the chocolates and crisps, instead reach for some fresh fruit, or perhaps some low calorie yoghurt.
When choosing your food off the shelves, go for those ones that have less salt content, less fat and sugar. When eating, chew slowly – don’t walk around while eating, and concentrate on your meal. The mind and the stomach needs time to register how much has been eaten. Have some semi-skimmed milk, but avoid the soft drinks and sweetened soft drinks, especially the fizzy ones – they’re very high in calories.
Many doctors would advise you to have vitamin supplements, but let’s bust a myth here – they’re not really necessary, until and unless you’re really unhealthy. If you are sensitive to healthy foods, then perhaps you need to pop a few supplements now and then, but not otherwise. But do take regular exercise – walk at least an hour every day. Resist the urge to take your car out for short trips to the library or the supermarket, and walk instead. It’s also a good idea to take the stairs rather than the elevator. Your body will thank you.
Also, limit your exposure to the sun- UV rays are quite harmful for your skin. Try to be in the shade between the hours of 11 am and 3 pm. If you must go out in the sun, wear loose cotton clothing, and appropriate sunscreen. Don’t let yourself burn. Getting enough sleep is also important – try to get at least 7-8 hours of sleep every night, go to bed at a regular time, and get up at a regular time.
Finally, be happy. Don’t let stress get to you. Take time off to relax. It’ll show, and you’ll be much happier and healthier!
